Pizza is a specialty of Neapolitan origin. According to a widespread belief, probably a historical falsehood, the chef Raffaele Esposito in June 1889 invented the Pizza Margherita with tomato, mozzarella and basil in homage to the Queen of Italy Margherita di Savoia and the Italian flag.
