The prickly pear fruit consists of a peel covered with thin thorns and a pulp that – depending on the variety – is white, red or yellow. The plant is so widespread in the Italian landscape – especially in Sicily, Calabria and Basilicata – because birds, greedy for the fruit, ensure that the seeds are dispersed and take root easily.
