The construction of the Colosseum was completed between 72 and 80 AD but the name only became widespread in the Middle Ages. It was probably so called because it appeared “colossal” (in Latin “colosseum”) or, according to other sources, it was so defined for its proximity to the colossal statue of Nero that was located right near the Flavian Amphitheatre.
