The name Liotru comes from the corruption of the name Eliodoro, a nobleman from Catania who attempted to become bishop of the diocese and then, without ever succeeding, fell into disgrace and devoted himself to black magic. According to legend, he was the sculptor of the elephant statue, and even – thanks to his magical powers – rode it to travel from Catania to Constantinople.
