Moorish Earrings

It is said that one day, during the Arab domination, a Moor happened to be under the balcony of a young girl who was busy tending her flowers, fell madly in love with her and declared his love to her. The young woman returned the feeling but, when she discovered that the man was already married and would soon be leaving to return to the East to his family, she cut off his head and made a basil pot with it. The Moor thus remained with her forever, on her balcony, and the plant grew lush, watered by the young woman's tears.
